Sally Penni Awarded Doctorate in Law for Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion

Kenworthy's Chambers | July 25, 2023

Kenworthy’s Chambers’ Criminal Barrister Sally Penni has been awarded an Doctorate in Law by the University of Salford Business School for her work in the field of law and contributions to EDI (equality, diversity, and inclusion).

The award was presented to Sally by University Chancellor Lucy Meacock, best known for being a Presenter on Granada Reports for over thirty years, at the Lowry Theatre in Media City on Wednesday 19th July 2023.

Sally Penni sits on Salford Business School’s advisory board as an Industry Advisor and has been instrumental in mentoring and coaching Salford Uni law students and starting initiatives at court.

Highlighting the strongly valued work Sally has been doing, Salford Business School’s Associate Dean for Enterprise and Engagement, Dr Francine Morris, said: “Sally does vital work to create meaningful career pathways for our students, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds.

“She has been very generous in opening her network to our students, including Judges, Barristers, and Solicitors who have themselves gone on to support our students. We look forward to continuing to work together for years to come.”

Sally Penni was previously awarded an honorary Doctor of Law by Manchester Metropolitan University. The fact that this is her second honorary Doctorate in Law is a testament to her tireless work helping develop underrepresented groups and mentor their transition into the legal sector, becoming Lawyers and Barristers.

Speaking about receiving her second Doctorate in Law from the University of Salford Business School, Sally said: “I am absolutely thrilled for my work to be recognised in this way. I hope to use this great honour to affect further change both in the courtroom and in our sector. I hope to work further and use this to create more opportunities for young people in the sector.”

Besides her work in Employment Law and as a Criminal Barrister, Sally Penni is the Founder and Chair of Women in the Law UK, a professional development organisation that supports gender diversity and women’s progression in the legal sector. She is a legal expert in her own right with a popular series of books and podcasts. She also sits as the Vice Chair of Association of Women Barristers and as a Board Member at The Advocates Gateway.
