Kenworthy's Chambers are over the moon to announce that the most recent Chambers and Partners rankings have recognised 11 of our Member Barristers, listed across five different teams!

This article will round up the rest of our teams who have been ranked in the 2024 Chambers and Partners guide and will feature testimonials attributed to our diverse team of expert Barristers across Costs Litigation, Employment Law, Crime, and Administrative and Public Law.

Costs Litigation

Kenworthy’s Chambers Head of Costs Margaret McDonald was described as "A very compelling advocate." Chambers and Partners listed her strengths saying: "Margaret is tenacious and unrelenting at Costs hearings and is also good on technical issues. She was happy to seek views and work as a team with good collaboration."

The leading legal directory spoke about her practice, stating: “Margaret McDonald of Kenworthy's Chambers routinely receives instructions from claimants and defendants in Costs cases. She is well versed in claims arising out of clinical negligence and solicitor-client disputes.”

Employment Law

On top of his practice as an Employment Barrister, Bruce Henry has had an extremely busy year. He was mentoring our new member Barrister Matthew Todd, and he also delivered a talk at Slater and Gordon and an external course USDAW (The Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers) covering tribunal hearings and advocacy skills. 

He will be happy to have secured a strong ranking in Chambers and Partners, who commended him saying, “Bruce Henry is a respected Barrister with a busy employment practice. He is instructed by claimants and trade union members in discrimination, reasonable adjustment, and other matters in the Employment Tribunal and the EAT.” They also went on to note that "Bruce Henry gives solid and expert advice."

Crime

Additionally, we were ranked as a Set for Crime,  with Chambers and Partners announcing: “Kenworthy's Chambers offers ‘excellent counsel’ with expertise spanning a wide range of criminal matters.

“The set's barristers are experienced in both the prosecution and defence of cases relating to homicides, high-value drugs conspiracies, and serious violent and sexual offences. 

“The team is routinely instructed to appear in trials in the Crown Courts and in appellate proceedings, and the Barristers undertake both private and publicly funded work. Recent cases for the set have included R v Hussain, involving a complex intersection of sexual and violent offences in alleged attacks on two women.”

The leading legal directory recognised three of our Member Barristers as ‘Notable Practitioners’ within the field of Crime, the first of which is our Head of Chambers Barry Grennan, who was described as “A robust trial Advocate.” Chambers and Partners also said: “Barry Grennan is Head of Chambers and specialises as a Criminal Defence Advocate and is often instructed in serious and complex criminal cases. 

“He is an expert on white-collar crime and is vastly knowledgeable on all areas of serious crime, including gang-related murders, sexual offences, people trafficking, and infanticide. He also boasts a thriving fraud and regulatory practice. 

The second of our three Member Barristers picked out by Chambers and Partners is our Deputy Head of Chambers Patrick Cassidy. “Patrick Cassidy is a highly capable Criminal Defence Advocate with a broad practice encompassing the full spectrum of serious general and financial crime. 

“He has experience of the most complex and challenging cases including sexual offences, child abuse, and gangland crime.”

The legal directory went on to say, “He also handles cases concerning police misconduct and deaths in custody” and added, “Patrick Cassidy is an excellent practitioner with superb client care skills."

Praise must also be awarded to our Criminal Clerks Paul Mander and Greg Highton who ensured Kenworthy’s client services were celebrated by the top legal directory. They said: "The clerks are always helpful and effective."

Chambers and Partners added “The clerks are always very accommodating to make sure matters are covered” and finished by noting that “Paul Mander and Greg Highton are great Clerks.”

Administrative and Public Law

Huge congratulations for Administrative and Public Law Barrister Shazia Khan who was ranked by Chambers and Partners in two Practice Areas, the other one being Immigration Law. They ranked her in Administrative and Public Law because “Shazia Khan specialises in judicial reviews concerning immigration and asylum. She represents clients before the High Court and Court of Appeal.”

We are proud to have been ranked as a set for Administrative and Public Law. Chambers and Partners describe our set saying: “Kenworthy's Chambers possesses wide-ranging expertise in bringing and defending judicial review challenges as well as advising on public law issues more broadly.” They supplemented this by adding: “Members offer considerable strength in matters concerning immigration detention and deportation, policing and prisons as well as community care and children's rights.”
